Mission Possible

I read about one and heard in person of one.
A guy was high up in a corporation and unhappy.  He was making heaps of brass and if that was his only motivation then he would have remained unhappy in the job.   But he chose to leave the job and take one that was lower paying and in one sense not as “prestigious.”  But he was happy as Larry (and Larry it seems was a fairly happy chappy).
At a recent market a guy was telling me about his dad who had a similar experience.  High powered position but unhappy.  He left the job and took a “lower” one and is happier for doing it.
To me this is not about high powered positions being a guaranteed source of unhappiness.  They are not.  Some people are definitely made for them and flourish in them.
But the whole point for me is that high powered positions are not necessary for happiness.  What is important to me is that I am in a position I am made for, and comfortable in. This does not lead to a life of ease.  No matter where I am I should be challenged and grow.
I reckon there are few things worse than being a square peg in a round hole. Sometimes such things are valuable just to show me that is not where I belong.  Someone once told of not knowing where they belonged and just trying things.  It was though the trying they found out what was not right for them.
Some may say “that’s ok but harder to do when my family depends on my income.”  To me that is valid but should not stop me from keeping my eyes open for opportunities that are a better fit for me.
Life is short but long.  Being unhappy for years not only affects me, but those around me.
I reckon there is a right role for all.  Like it says in Mission Impossible”, “Your mission Jim (or Mary or Des or Frank or me) should you choose to accept, is to find it.”
