Measuring Days

6/6/2024

James Clear asks what I consider an amazing question this morning in his email. “How should you measure your days?”  He goes on to say, “It's easy to measure your days in dollars earned or tasks completed, but there are other units of measurement to consider: What would you do today if you wanted to maximize laughter?  What would you do today if you wanted to maximize time outside?  What would you do today if you wanted to maximize peace of mind?  What unit of measurement serves you best right now?”
Much seems to dovetail together with what he said earlier. “There are at least 4 types of wealth (and I would put spiritual health under 3): 1.  Financial wealth (money) 2.  Social wealth (status) 3.  Time wealth (freedom) 4.  Physical wealth (health).  Be wary of jobs that lure you in with 1 and 2, but rob you of 3 and 4.
Too often I come across older people who feel the past stands in the way of their future.  It seems to me my past is one of the greatest hindrances to my future.  Yet it is my view that my past need not determine my future.  It does not matter if I am 6 or 66 the time I have is now, and beginning right now I can be who I chose to be.
I cannot deny that in-grained habits can be hard to beat.  Yet along with asking for help I agree with something James Clear said in the email.  "If you're having trouble sticking to a new habit, try a smaller version until it becomes automatic. Do less than you're capable of, but do it more consistently than you have before."  I am big on such things.  As far as I am concerned (and it may seem cliche) it is never too late to change unless I decide it is too late to change.
I guess this ties in with something I hold to.  It is summed up in the joke, “how do you eat an elephant?”  Answer “One bite at a time.”  What is large can be broken down into manageable parts.  Maybe the whole is too much, but a bit at a time it is not.
I liked what I received today.  I find it constantly beneficial to be reminded of what matters to me.
