Matter of the Heart

It seems so often we think “that is the person we want.”
I think of the NRL advertising campaign.  They pick someone to be “the face of rugby league.”  They are drawn to that person as they are good looking, good at what they do, and known.  They then feature the person in flashy ads with great tunes.  All is good for a while.  Then the person does something, or says something that is unacceptable.  Before we know it, the ad and endorsements are gone, and someone has taken their place.  Even the latest face of Rugby League, has had his share of controversy.
I personally do not think that I would like to be the one who makes the decision of “who” these days.  So often the person does not turn out to be what is expected.  Very few seem to have gone the distance.  There are probably heaps, but I know Rodger Federer has.
I cannot help but think it is like setting impossible standards.  We are asking someone to be perfect in an imperfect world.  So often it seems to be a case of going the distance, before what is inside comes out.
It seems to me, it is so human nature to gravitate to someone who appears to be the full package.  In the olden days it was tall and good looking and good at what they do.  I think they used to say “tall, dark and handsome.”  Today it is not much different but I can add photogenic.
When doing a crowd funding thing I often chose the pretty girls over others, just because when faced with a choice, I naturally gravitated that way.  Of course choosing anyone is taking a chance.  We really do not know a person.  We can think we do, and all the evidence might suggest they are right for the job, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Of course the size of the audience matters too.  If it is small, a fall from grace causes a minor ripple.  I remember hearing of someone saying “I can’t go on – everybody knows!”  The person they were talking to enquired further, and it turned out about 50 people knew in a world of billions.  Hardly a case of “everybody knows.”  If the audience is large it can have major ramifications.  The Australian cricket captain’s fall from grace had world-wide implications.
I watched something on you tube the other day, that showed a person that had enjoyed phenomenal success.  Then they did something that was deemed “unacceptable.” They said they feel like they need to start again.  Things going awry, can be due to something I do, or not meeting the standards that are acceptable at the time.
I know that for myself, when they removed the brain tumour and caused a stroke, I was given a choice (I guess I should be thankful they found a brain in the first place).  Being totally upfront, I said, if I was twenty, I may want to start again, but I did not want to at the age I was.
What is on the inside, will come out.  As Abraham Lincoln said "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."
