Magnetic Island - Fishing

5/9/2018

There was a jetty on Magnetic Island that was scary to fish off.  At night it was positively sinister.  The jetty was at Arcadia.  It was an old docking jetty, but they had abandoned it and built another.
I was looking over the edge one time when something emerged from the water with two big shinny eyes.  The hairs on the back of my neck stood up.  It turned out it was a big water rat but I did not know that at the time.  I withdrew from the edge but that thing came up.  There was only one thing for me to do, and that was high tail it out of there.  The trouble was, we both had the same idea at the same time, and both hurriedly headed down the jetty side by side.
Every year at a certain time, the bait fish would congregate there.  It was at that time, the Serious Fisher People would come out.  Oh and us.
The bait fish were easy to see, and time was spent jagging them for use as bait.  That to me was fun in itself, but the object for the Serious Fisher People was to use those bait fish to catch the Mackerel feeding on them. The Mackerel could be seen darting into the bait fish for a feed. They were shadowy figures but they were visible.  I tried fishing for Mackerel but never successfully.
Legend was, a shark lived over to the right.  We never had proof, but we believed it.  It was that sort of place.
At night time it had a life of its own.  I do not recall doing much fishing then, but I do remember seeing two whales swim out to sea.  Once I knew what they were it made sense.  Magnetic Island used to be home to a whaling station.  I will never forget them in the moonlight and seeing them disappear into the distance together.  Their blowholes sort of gave away what they were.
Bob Dylan sang “it’s a shadowy world, skies a slippery grey, a woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet.”  One thing is for sure, at night this was a shadowy world.  I have no idea why we went out there at night.  I am sure it was to fish, but I have no memory of any fishing.  It was the sort of place for a kid to avoid, and be drawn to, at the same time.
I remember only catching bait fish out there, but it sure was a Mecca to the Serious Fisher People
