Lying

I probably repeat myself fairly often.  I say probably, because I really cannot remember.  Generally it is not like I mean too.  It just happens.  If I were to say “When I believe in something I tend to be enthusiastic” I would know I am repeating myself, because I copied and pasted it from something I posted on Facebook.  So if I did not know I was repeating myself there, I would be in real trouble I reckon.
One of the things I can take assurance from this though, is that if I am repeating myself, the story remains consistent.    It is one of the reasons I would make a terrible liar.  It is too hard to remember who I told what.
There seems to be something liberating about being able to talk freely.  I sure would rather that, then feeling I needed to tread carefully, as if through a minefield, in case what I say now, does not correlate with what I said before.  Of course there are those, who could not care less.  One thing I have found without fail, is that there is nothing hidden, which won’t come out.  It may take an instant, or it may take a lifetime, but it happens.
I have only known one serial liar.  He just had to open his mouth.  These people are rare, but unfortunately, they are out there.  The only reason I knew it, was that he told us.  I and others were totally surprised.  What came across when he lied, was totally believable.
I guess lying is like a quick fix.  It may get me out of trouble at the time, but usually it means I have dug a deeper hole for myself.  At times too, I might think I am doing someone a favour.  I may see something as easing their burden, and lightening their load.  Unfortunately, the end result is undesirable.  There are those too, that are in it only for themselves.  They see whatever they say as a means to an end.  The end they usually see, is wealth for themselves.
There are times too, when it is a real dilemma.  I read about people that were hiding Jews from the Germans.  All but one agreed that if the Germans came and asked, they would say the Jews were anywhere but where they were.  The Germans came and asked.  The one said where they were, but said it in such a way that the Germans did not believe her, and did not even look.
It is easy to take the moral high ground, but it seems to me, it is really important I am true to myself.  It is easy to say one thing when there is no pressure, but quiet another, when the pressure is on.  I knew a guy who had been captured by the Japanese.  He was asked if he could ever forgive what they did.  When there was no pressure, the answer was yes.  He said no.  It was on national television.  He told me he regretted it.  It is probably good to believe something, say it, and practice it, but not good to presume.
I may not do something, but it does not mean I can set myself up.  Certainly I may be able to help, but I reckon I must always remember the old saying “there but for the grace of God go I.”
