Loss

So Queensland got done.  It was fairly animated at our place until half time.  It was close.  It was anyone’s game.  As it turns our it was well and truly NSW’s game.
There was plenty of comfort food available.  What people brought seemed so much better than what we had supplied.  We had supplied some good things but somehow Twisties and home-made cooking and Donuts and Anzac Biscuits to name a few, seemed so desirable.
They did not dull the pain of the loss though.  I was left comforting myself that the next game was in Queensland.  Having local support should help but they would have gained so much confidence from their win.  It seemed with each play players were getting better.  Full time was a mercy.  In fact someone asked when they reach 50 is the mercy rule invoked so that the suffering comes to an end?  In the end that rule was not needed but it was a close thing.
But there is more to life than football.  I will wax philosophical in an attempt to hide my disappointment.  I mean, it is only a game.  There is always next time.  I am trying to think of other cliches I can trot out to try to disguise my disappointment.  All I can say is bring on July 13th.  It is a new day.  Full of new possibilities.   Really it is full of the chance to erase this memory.
At least the company was good.  Even the guy who always gives me a hard time.  Most were into it.  One couple was not, but it was great they came to be a part of the atmosphere.  They left at half time.  At east it was close then.
Not like the time we wanted to introduce a friend to Australian Rules.  So we took him to a Lions game.  It was several years ago, and the Lions played atrociously.  It was the worst game of footy I have ever seen.  It was only eclipsed but how badly they played the next week.  Those two games were the low point in the Lions play, and one of them we showcased Aussie Rules footy to a mate from overseas.
But he was gracious.  He has seen them play better.  But that game lives on in my mind.  I actually think the game last night will not.  Not that I do not like Sate of Origin, but the memory of results seems to be short lived.  Win or lose I am at a loss to remember who won the year before.
That is probably just as well when considering nights like last night.  I have enough to deal with without adding results I do not control.  Trying hard is always good but sometimes it is not enough.  One thing about being noble in defeat, is it is still a defeat.
I did not play but my representatives did.  They were weighed in the balance and found wanting.  I can live with that.  Just as well really as I have to.
But there is next game.  I live in hope.
