Look at me, Look at me

I was thinking about pride and when I looked into it I saw there were many more forms of it then I was considering.  There was a pride of lions, the LGBTQ+ pride and what I was considering.
Even that is seen to have two sides which I think is right.  Pride can be seen as bot a virtue and a vice.
Examples of it being a virtue is seen in things like, “pride in ones work” or “pride in the way they were dressed.”  It does not suggest an over inflated opinion of oneself but it suggests a sense of satisfaction of doing ones best to suite the occasion.
For me that is ok when it does not involve singing ones own praise.  As Leonado Da Vinci said, “he who truly knows has no occasion t shout.”  For me pride in ones achievements does not depend on the praises of another.  Judith S Martin was credited with saying, “it is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities without your help,” or to quote Ed Howe “a modest man is usually admired – if people ever hear of him.”
The pride I was thinking of can be called “vanity” as well.  It seems to me Wikipedia got it right when it said, “it may also refer to … [an] irrational sense of one's personal value, status, or accomplishments].  I guess there is a positive in it as Lucille Harper noted, “the nice thing about egotists is they don’t talk about other people.”   Or from what I have seen if they do talk about others it is to pull down and exult themselves.
To me the world is full of this sort of pride (and I am an inhabitant of the world).  It is like the number one irrational attribute of mankind.  I call it irrational because to me no one has cause for the pride that is seen as a vice.
For sure credit where credit is due but no one has cause for credit for something over which they had no control – like who they were born.  Maybe the last word could go to a Benjamin Whichcote, “none are so empty as those who are full of themselves.”  It is a fire I continually need to put out.
