Limber

Boy can I pick em.  It was my turn to pick the word from the dictionary.  Just about every word on both pages I had heard of.  But of course, I chose one I had never heard of.  It was “limber” in a nautical sense.  “Limber (Naut.) Gutter on either side of keelson for drainage to pump-well.”
Shows how much I know.  I had to look up keelson.  I found it and know where on a ship it is (it strengthens the hull running through the centre.  I used to crew a cobra catamaran and no doubt limbers were on the inside of the hulls, but I had no idea about such things.)
Gutters, not in a nautical sense, I have had a bit to do with.  But it does seem most gutters I have had to do with involve water.
The one’s here seem ok.  But like all gutters they are built to take a certain capacity.  Once that capacity is exceeded, they overflow.  I can tell here when the rain is really heavy as the gutters cascade water from all sorts of different places.
We do think the gutter on the shed is uneven.  What makes us think that is seeing the birds get a drink from it in perfectly dry weather.  But it is too high for us to investigate.  We could - but we choose not to.
Where I used to live, I had a bad gutter experience.  I needed a new one over an outdoor area.  On occasions I like to give those just starting out a chance.  Everyone needs to start somewhere but on this occasion, it was a mistake.  He purchased the gutter alright, but I was amazed at how much trouble he had getting it at the right level.  What he did, did the job, but it seems anyone could have done it and maybe done better.
Anyway, I had that roof changed and that guy seemed to know what he was doing.  Except I had to get him back because he took the lazy man’s way.  He connected the down pipes to pre-existing holes.  Those holes had been discarded for a reason and I found out why.  I have no idea where the holes went but the water backed up and when it rained, I had a flood.  He came back and the water goes away now.
Before we were married Merril had a bad gutter experience.  Water was not reaching her gutters and the evidence was the discoloration of the ceiling inside.  Merril employed someone to fix it.  Turns out they should have been called the “Doggy Brothers.”  While on the roof “fixing” the problem they declared to Merril they had found a brown snake.  They said it is in that box over there if you want a look.  Merril went over and declared there was no snake there.  Their response “on, it must have escaped.”  Anyway, whatever they did it did not work, and they could no longer be found.  That was not surprising really as they fooled some of the people some of the time, but could not fool everyone all the time.
Gutters mostly just do their job.  They are an out of sight out of mind thing.  They occasionally need repair or replacement but on the whole, they are not thought about if they are doing their job.
Them not doing their job would demand immediate action on a boat though.
