Learn & Do

It is interesting to me how something familiar can seemingly come to life.
Today it hit me how important relationships are to doing.
By that I mean I am all for the importance of learning.  Doing something right.  Yet to me the object of learning is doing.  There may be exceptions I have not thought of yet, but every invention of mankind has an impact on others.  It does seem that every invention meant for good can be used for harm.
The funniest conversation I ever had with a specialist was when I needed a double hernia.  I said I suppose you have done plenty of these and he said “oh no, I just googled it.”  Then I asked about anaesthetic and he said they had a hammer for that.  I suggested I may go elsewhere and he asked me not to as he had a mortgage to pay.
How this relates is he had done a lot of learning.  Unapplied learning is potentially wasted learning.  Even when I learn a hobby that may seemingly be for me only, I tend to be able to use the skills learned.  I can show others how I did it and provide inspiration.
 Years ago my boss and I were discussing plastic drip irrigation.  I had said the person who had invented the system probably made a gazillion dollars.  The boss said, “and rightly so.”  He was right in my mind.  It has aided millions.  Another fella invented a traffic calming system that was seen to be an answer to a particular problem. It has aided many.
So for me it is a case of doing what aids others.  Seeing my activities in the light of helping.  I know I am a people person, but I do think that even the most non people person can do things that aid not just themselves but another.
Sometimes I will need to lock myself away to learn, but there inevitably comes a time when I can choose that my learning becomes doing.
