Leadership Excellence

I have been reading a book called “Leadership Excellence.” I really like it.
In the chapter I am looking at at the moment, the author mentioned things everyone legitimately wants at some stage.  These include to be first, to be promoted, to be great and to have things.  He then talks of seven good attitudes which are willingness, confidence, humility, thankfulness, serving, generosity and obedience.
He talks a lot about selling.  The point that stands out big time to me, is selling is all about serving.  When you give people what they want, they keep coming back.  It is human nature for unsatisfied people to just not return without explanation.  I always felt with our table tennis club that we needed to find out why people left.  I felt we could not fix a problem, if we did not know about it.  It is one thing to get people in the door, and another thing to keep them coming back.  Most reasons for leaving are innocuous. Some are problems that should be fixed.
There are a heap of quotes that I was totally unaware of, but which really ring true with me. Abraham Lincoln said “nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”  Ken Blanchard and Norman Vincent Peal wrote “people with humility don’t think less of themselves, they just think of themselves less.”  Because of my particular bent, I really like a story Frank Lloyd Cochran relays.  He tells how in the midst of people around him involved in a shopping frenzy, he paused to see a beautiful sunset and geese.  A bag lady saw the same thing and her words were “God spoils me.”  I like that because her attitude was not dependant on her station in life.  Jack Welsh said “A company cannot supply job security, only customers can do that…” Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get.  We make a life by what we give.”
There are a number of quotes from the author himself that I really like to.  He said “Great actions are born of great attitudes” “Our attitudes determine our altitude” “neither time nor resources are available for the unwilling” “people are far more open to someone serving them, than someone trying to rule them” “when we choose humility, we retain nobility” “thankfulness is the air conditioner of the soul” “the feeling of being listened to…far exceeds the problem at hand” “the generous person…provides a safe risk taking environment” and finally “the person who takes orders well, gives them well.”
I am happy to have been engaged with this stuff for a while.
