Koala

6/6/2025

I have decided to write about the ornaments around our yard.  I can think of four - though there may be others I think of that don’t fit the classification perfectly but basically fill that roll  (I am thinking of our frogs, lizard and kangaroo.)
Right now though I am thinking of the stone Koala we have.  I really have no idea where he came from.  Perhaps he was here.  Perhaps he was Merril’s.
Whatever the case he lurks in our yard.  Lurk might be a bit unfair.  At work someone said I lurked and I said I was not lurking.  I was just there.  And quiet.  I have found that if I don’t say anything people assume I am real smart.  The exact opposite may be true, but they don’t know that.  Unless I open my mouth. That tends to give it away.
Our koala is cute but not all there.  I don’t know if that is saying something about his personality or what.  But he must have come through an accident at some point.  Maybe he was dropped.  I can’t imagine it was wilful damage.  I mean who gets something only to destroy it (some guitarists in bands excepted).
He is sort of quiet in the yard.  Someone my come across him unexpectedly.  That is sort of what we try to do.  Serendipity.  I looked it up.  That is the right word.  We like to have areas to explore with items scattered around that can be come across unexpectedly.  He, she, it is one of them.
I reckon that is how I would come across a koala in the place I used to live.  They called it a koala park.  Fair dinkum I have never seen a koala in it.  Or heard one.  I did hear one in the place I had before that.  I did not know what it was.  If anyone has ever heard a koala mating the male makes an unearthly sound.  I did not know it was a koala and would hear the sound at night.  I had no idea what was ‘lurking’ in the bushland behind my place.  I was ok when I learned it was a koala.
Again, I had never seen one, but I had heard them.  The next door neighbour said he had seen one but he loved a drink, and I was sort of not surprised at his seeing things.
I have never heard ours though.  And I don’t expect to.  I mean, he is an inanimate object,  Don’t try to convince me he will make a koala sound, cause I am on to you.
