Known Unknowns

Click hereDonald Rumsfeld made famous to quote “There are known knowns, known unknowns, unknown unknowns.” Actually he used a variation of it in his quote.  I am really less interested in the context, as to the statement.  An Australian economist said “Although the language may be tortured, the basic point is both valid and important."  It is believed the phrase was first used by a couple of psychologists in the 1950’s.
I sorta like it because it sums up me.  I know I know some stuff.  Not much, but enough to get me by.  When it comes to the workings of a car though, they are for me known unknowns.  I am just glad the car generally gets me from a to b.  I get it serviced when I need to.  To me, finding a good mechanic is like finding a good doctor.  When I find him/her, I stick with them.  I have been to mechanics that saw me coming.  They say the car needs thousands of dollars’ worth of work.  When that is the case, I get another quote.  A good mechanic to me acknowledges the work will have be to done, but it does not have to be done now.
Wikipedia says “Known unknowns result from recognized but poorly understood phenomena. On the other hand, unknown unknowns are phenomena which cannot be expected because there has been no prior experience or theoretical basis for expecting the phenomena.”  I have heaps of known unknowns.  I could say I have a plethora of them but that would not be enough.  In fact, the more I know, the more I know I don’t know.
I have been watching on the ABC “The Planets.”  I find there is heaps of speculation in that show, but it is the pictures and proven stuff that blows me away.  I did not know that after Saturn the distance between planets is not measured in millions of miles but billions.  I flicked on to the History channel and they were digging up what is considered to be the earliest known collective monument.  There was no writing.  It was all carvings of animals.  It is in Turkey.  I never knew it existed.  Sort of reminded me of football teams.  The Manly Sea Eagles, the Brisbane Bronco’s, West Tigers.  Each pillar had a dominant animal on it.  Like each tribe had a pillar.  Talk about the more I know the more I realize I don’t know.
For me, unknown unknowns I cannot worry about.  If I concerned myself with them, I would be a mess.  Some may think it is too late already, but if I am, then I am blissfully ignorant.  As Joyce Meyer says “When you begin to worry, go find something to do. Get busy being a blessing to someone; do something fruitful. Talking about your problem or sitting alone, thinking about it, does no good; it serves only to make you miserable. Above all else, remember that worrying is totally useless. Worrying will not solve your problem.”  Or to quote George Burns “If you ask what is the single most important key to longevity, I would have to say it is avoiding worry…. And if you didn't ask me, I'd still have to say it.”
Personally, I do not have time to worry about stuff.  I am busy enough already, and besides, I want to use my time making known unknowns, known knowns. to edit.
