Know Your Limits

4/3/2019

I know my limitations.  At least I think I do.  If I go at something like a bull at a gate, I mostly come off second best.  I put it down to a learning experience.  I have sorta learned to tread carefully.  It can be frustrating to others, but it works for me.
I have talked about the “tread carefully’ thing with some younger people, and I may as well be talking to a brick wall.  It does not compute or fit into their framework.  Their thinking seems to be “just go for it.”  I agree there is a time to “just go for it,” but I have found there is also a time to make my actions considered.  Particularly initially.  Once something is worked out, I am all for “just go for it” (when older, “just going for it” is slower anyway)
This morning I have looked for a place to hang a painting.  I found one I reckon, but I need to find out if there is electricity in the wall.  Hanging the painting involves a hammer and nail.  I have looked up the web to find what I can.  One site said “Accidentally cutting through one of these cables could make your project take much longer in a best-case scenario, and in a worst-case scenario, could actually be deadly.”  It is the “deadly” part I really want to avoid.
There are some things that for me are just deadly.  Things I just know I will fail at.  I guess I know me well enough to know what they are.  In some instances, it is like do this and this and this to earn this.  Sometimes that is just not me.  Though sometimes it is definitely worth giving it my best shot.  Recently I went to table tennis training.  The advice I got was really good.  I did wonder about the timeframe mentioned to make it a part of me.  Good chance for me it would be longer I reckon.
It is probably why I have never embraced a lot of things.  I just cannot earn it.  It seems the harder I try the further away it becomes.  If I need to earn brownie points, I am a “why bother” type of guy.  The goal may be admirable, but why should I set myself up for failure.  Why be miserable?  I know I can be happy, but it seems to always be short term.  Besides, there are places that will happily milk me dry in my quest.
I pulled out of rehab when no end date had been specified.  I was doing all that was asked.  I knew I could do stuff at home without incurring the cost each week.  I spoke to someone in the industry and they said they would have milked you dry.  They would have wanted me until I could no longer pay.  I knew I could achieve the goal without the cost.  It was a no brainer (which is ideal really) for me.
If there is a way I can achieve my aims without incurring upfront unreasonable costs to myself, that is what I will gravitate to.  I don’t mind if something costs me everything, if it is what I want, and the only way.  I just don’t want to try and earn something when it cannot guarantee I will achieve my goal.
