Kids

ClicI heard a phrase the other day I like.  The person said “I’m a kid undercover”
I think I like the phrase because it seems to me, I am designed to be child-like all my life.  That is not childish - but child-like.  I think if I was childish then I would probably be still playing with toy cars and building tracks for them from the front to the back and going “look at me, look at me!”  If that were the case, I think it would be legitimate to say “Houston, we have a problem.”
It seems we grow up and most have kids.  Not all, but the majority.  The thing about kids is, they want a person to be a part of their world, and it happens.  Really how interesting to adults are toy cars and tracks.  But adults immerse themselves.  In a way, it is like being a kid again.  Then it seems grandparents enjoy the company of the grandkids.  Again, they are kept young.
That is not to negate all the necessary adult stuff.  It seems a pity to me though, when I become so engrossed in that stuff, I become self-obsessed and forget the needs of others.   Often I justify myself, but that is all it is in the end, an attempt at self-justifying.  The adult stuff is important for personal growth and contributing to society.  But kids seem to be everywhere.  They are either at home or out “there,” wherever “there” might be.  When I was a kid, I needed to be related to as a kid to understand.  If an adult started spruiking adult stuff, it would go over my head and I would continue to look at them, and then blink several times and move on.  The term “does not compute” comes to mind.  Relating to anyone has to be at a level that is right, or it is a waste of time.
I guess I am trying to defend why I have a pile of animal hand puppets.  They are available anytime for loan if wanted.  I never had kids but I have been a kid (believe it or not), and also appreciate everyone from the oldest to the youngest.  Just do not ask me to hold a baby.  I have only ever done that once in my life.  The proprietor (is that the word?) saw my discomfort.  Thankfully my life has been full and interesting.
I reckon the desire to be child-like is in everyone.  I think that is the only reason my character “cattle grazing” was appreciated.  I wrote heaps of stories about him.  The feedback I got suggests the stories were liked.  I sure liked writing them, and am really glad I was not the only one who enjoyed his antics.  He was described as a “doofus” cattle.  Where doofus means goofy, then he was.  He was simple, but he was giving it his best shot.
There seems to be a harking back to the days when “life was simpler.”  I do not know that life was much simpler than when I was a kid.  There was safety and provision, and someone bigger than me who knew stuff, who I could turn to.  It seems that whether I am a kid or an adult, that is what I want.k here to edit.
