I am quiet enjoying this book of speeches, but I am taking it slowly.  I am reading a speech by Margaret Thatcher at the moment.  She was asked to nominate what she considered her best three speeches, and this was one of them.
She was talking about invading the Falkland Islands.  There was a very small number of people that expressed opposition to invading.  Their argument was there are such a small number of people (1,800 total) and it is so far away.
Her response was (and I highlighted this) “right and wrong are not measured by a head count of those to whom that wrong has been done.”  To me, who said something does not determine its rightness or wrongness in my eyes, but what was said.  The war was awkward, it was costly in terms of pounds and the human cost, but to me, it was right.  She said something else I highlighted.  “whenever the rule of force as distinct from the rule of law is seen to succeed, the world moves a step closer to anarchy.”
But it was the first quote here that really got my attention.  “Right and wrong are not measured by a head count of those to whom that wrong has been done.”  I think I agree with that.
There are many causes where the number who support it is small.    In that case it is often important they get someone in power on board to effect change.  To me, low numbers of people that support something does not invalidate the rightness or wrongness of the cause.  On the other side of the ledger sometimes overwhelming numbers alone cause change when it is needed (the Velvet and People’s revolutions).
I personally would go so far as to say that even if just one believed something was right and I agreed with them, they need rescuing if required.  It could be awkward and costly but to me it is worth it.  The last thing I want is for brute force to win the day over what is right, simply because in that instance it was stronger.  It may take work, and it may take time.  It also may take some serious recruiting, but to me, it is important that justice always prevails.
It seems the rightness of a cause does not guarantee its success.  There are times, when something is believed in, that forces must be assembled.  This can take time.  At times the element of surprise takes justice by surprise but that does not negate the worthiness of the cause.
We see in history examples of when both have won the day.  Unfortunately, when brute force wins it tends to lead to oppression.  The previous speech I was reading was by someone who was opposed to a war.  He said they were not fighting a just war.  I reckon the Allies taking on the Germans and Japanese was just.  It was awkward and costly, but it was just.  I have a problem when wars are fought just to prop up a corrupt regime.
All these are just my five cents worth and perhaps you are due almost as much in change.  I may never hold the casting vote when the world is at the brink of momentous occasions.  But I will always support what is in my eyes, a just cause.
