Judging Another

4/9/2019

I heard something the other day that totally blew me away.  I had not considered it before, but it set me on a quest.  As a result, I read something that resounded with me.  The statement was “each of us will be held to the standard we impose on others.”
What I was considering was “do I have a right to judge someone else?”  My conclusion was yes and no.  How is that for a bet each way or having a foot in both camps.
The reason I say yes is I do it all the time.  Voting for a particular party is a judgement call.  I have often determined that a particular party most closely aligns with where I stand.
I judge a character all the time too.  Some, experience has taught me are no good for me and I need to stay away.  Others I will gravitate to as I have decided they are good for me.  To me they are judgement calls.  They can be called other things like decisions or assessments, but to me judgement fits well too.
One of the reasons I say I should not give a ruling I have mentioned before.  I am busy enough keeping an eye on myself to warrant time criticizing someone else.  This is sort of fraught to me and needs qualifying.  I feel I can judge an action, but I should not judge a person.  I read something today which brought this home to me.  How do I know the manic driver did not just lose his wife?  How do I know the rude salesperson did not just receive a diagnosis of cancer?  The action of driving badly or being rude is never justified in my mind, but I don’t know why a person did something that may be totally out of character.
I know it is unusual, but reconciliation is often not the way of it.  I saw this clearly in the table tennis club.  I have been in the wrong and in the right.  Normally it seems if someone is in the wrong the other has decided they will not associate with that person again.  People get the surprise of their life when I try to reconcile.  It is not something I enjoy.  I never say you beauty I was in the wrong and this is my chance!  Generally, it is nothing deep and meaningful but a small step.  A testing the waters.  This was brought home to me with one person who I knew was mad at me.  We had a talk and were reconciled.  I then asked if I invited him to my place for table tennis would he come.  They said they would, and they did.  We are not like best buddies, but we have not let our differences come between us.
It seems to me that setting myself up as “better” than someone is pretty stupid at best.  Ok they may do something I do not like, but so too might I to them.  Besides, I have found that if I harbour something against someone, I am normally the one who suffers.
I had someone say to me “you treat everyone the same” (hopefully it was a good same).  Like everyone, I am fallible.  There may be actions I do not approve of and need to make a judgement call on, but changing a person is not for me to do.  I do not want to set a standard for another that is higher than the one I set for myself.  Easy to say, harder to do.
