Journey

I was enjoying the music I was listening to this morning, but there ended up being one phrase that stood out to me.  I was listening to a song I like and had it on repeat.  I heard it for the first time yesterday and while there was much said I could dig, there was something said in passing that is what I remember.
“Your journey’s just begun.”  At that point that meant more to me than all the other good stuff I was hearing.
Here I am 63.  By one measure my journey is just about over.  I have lived a full life and a good one, and hopefully there are many more years to go.  Yet by another measure I am just a spring chicken.  There is something I am fond of saying, “70 years is nothing compared to 10,000 years”.
There is no doubt things can seem long and hard.  There are things said and done that invoke a “why?” from me.  There is much I will never understand.  But I reckon that is ok.  I would prefer to understand, but I don’t.  The reason that is ok is because of one word.  Trust.
I know that if I spend all my time trying to understand I would end up a mess (well more than I am now – yes I know, you did not know that was possible).  I am thankful for bits of understanding.  Things that help me function.  Things that contribute to what I am considering.  The picture always becomes larger the more I look into it.
But as they say we know more and more about less and less.  Mankind seems to have more and more aids to understanding.  I will never forget when they first realized the gnome sequence of man.  It was huge.  Enormous was a word used that did not seem out of place.  We were told it would take years to map it.  It took days.  People and computers were put to work and wella, it was done.
Finding a vaccine for corona virus was really quick.  Its importance created an urgency.  Many minds went to work and again wella, a number of products hit the market in what in the scheme of things was a very short time.  Not short enough for some, but short enough for many more.
I guess all this adds weight to a theory of mine.  I reckon if someone could work out how to make money from the rubbish on beaches and in the sea it would disappear really quickly.  But it is not a priority and is an ongoing problem.
Anyway, I am not a Steve Jobs.  I will do my bit, and although my understanding may be infinitesimal in the scheme of things it helps me get by and hopefully not create more problems than I solve.
But there are things for sure I will never understand.  Stuff that from where I stand look and are wrong.  The lot of mankind is not enhanced as a result.  In fact the total opposite.  But I am not God.  It is not my job to solve the world’s problems.  But it is my job to solve my world’s problems where I can.  That is a big job.  I will do my bit and so will others.  But my journey has just begun.
