It's in the Attempt

Bruce Lee said something I sota like. “"Don't fear failure. Not failure, but low aim, is the crime. In great attempts it is glorious even to fail."
I do not do something with the aim of failing.  In fact, I think I can safely say I have never deliberately set myself up for failure.
It is one of the things I am big on right now.  I am deliberately setting myself achievable goals within great goals.  Goals where I celebrate wins and not rue failures.  I used to be good at setting myself up for failure.  I would have a big list of attainable and non-attainable items I would try to achieve.  Invariably I was disappointed in myself.  Instead of concentrating on the weaknesses I saw, I would throw the baby out with the bathwater.  That was no good.  Instead of achieving a little, I ended up achieving nothing.
I have done away with what I used to do.  Now I deliberately set myself achievable goals.  Invariably I set higher goals, but it is the achieving of the original goals I concentrate of achieving.  All else is a bonus.
I have found “win to win” beats “defeat to defeat”.  Besides I get a buzz out of celebrating.  It is way good to feel good about myself.  My aim is not low but what I set out to achieve is compartmentalized in achievable blocks.
As someone once said I would rather aim high and fail then aim for nothing and succeed.  Aiming high may be fraught, but in my mind worth it.  It seems to me much good can be achieved along the way.
I do not know where math's is these days, but I know students were being rewarded for getting processes right.  The answer could be wrong, but the process revealed until they went wrong was seen and marked positively.
I do not know the rights and wrongs of such things, but I do believe success and failure can be like that.  I may aim high and fail but a lot along the way could be right.  It is that that can happen to me.  A failure does not mean all is a failure.
To me success is measured in the whole process rather than just the final outcome.  It is way more satisfying to correct a mistake while doing, rather than starting from scratch or not attempting at all.
I would rather get it right every time from start to finish but it has not worked that way for me.  But then failure is not the crime.  Not trying is.
