Inheritance

I have seen movies or tv shows where a group of people gather on one side of a table and listen to the only person on the other side of the table, read out a will.  The person may have left 15 gazillion dollars to the Cat Society and $2 to Mavis.  What is, and how it is distributed, depends on the one leaving the stuff.  It is their priorities.
Too often I have seen in life where a fair will is contested.  Someone wanted very little to do with a person in life, but they are willing to fight tooth and nail for that person’s possessions and their own perceived “rights”.  People matter less than things.  No wonder Machiavelli said “A son can bear with equanimity the loss of his father, but the loss of his inheritance may drive him to despair.”
Someone else may have spent their time looking after the person, and devoting a lot of time ensuring they had what they needed.  Anything that comes that person’s way is a bonus.  Possessions were not their chief aim.  Making sure the person had the best quality of life possible was.
It seems to be a fact of life that outcomes are not always fair.  Someone intent on robbing a home in the dead of night, and tripping on a hose in the yard and suing and winning does not seem fair to me.  Many years ago, we had a smoker that worked where I worked, and sued the workplace and won.  His claim?  Too much smoke in the environment.  I could only shake my head at that one.
I have received a couple of inheritances.  Never much, but always more than I started with.  I think the fact I am not living like a millionaire shows it was never much.  Yet I feel I am living like a millionaire.  Enough is all we need, and we have enough.
One inheritance I have received is contested.  Even though what I have been given is rightfully mine, the contester would be happy to see me with nothing.  They are not wanting the best for me, but the best for themselves only.
Even though fighting is not really in my nature, (bein a peace lovin guy and all), I will fight.  If I feel there is an injustice being perpetrated and I should contest it, I’m a “put up ya dukes” kind of guy.  Though I must admit my track record in physical fights is not good.  Perhaps I need to be more like some animals and puff myself up to look bigger than I am.  In the meantime, I normally find other ways to engage an adversary.
I will fight for what is rightfully mine, but I know right now right does not make success automatic.  Sometimes fair is elusive for me, but fair always prevails in the end.
