Indian Myna's

Indian Myna’s
As I have mentioned before the Indian Myna’s birds are not my favourite birds that visit the yard.  In fact I would say they are my least favourite.
I used to see them wandering around on a neighbours property and that was alright as far as I was concerned.  They were there and I was here.  They discovered though that I feed our birds.  Once they discovered that they decide our yard was the place to be.
As I say I am not fond of them but I do admire them.  They seem to be some of the most intelligent birds I have ever come across.  They seem to accept that if they do something then there is no point complaining if someone else does the same thing to them.
Stealing food is a case in point.  They are the best food thieves I have come across.  Invariably some other bird comes across a tasty morsel and begins to consume it.  Having something seems to be the catalyst to stealing something.  These Myna birds run across the yard and take the food for themselves.  They may go some distance away to consume it.  That is an invitation for another bird to run to where they are and take the food for themselves.
Even when a crow hides food often there is an Indian Myna’s following and watching where the food is kept.  We do laugh at the crows though.  They find a spot to hide the food and cover it with a leaf.  Never mind if it is blowing a gale and the cover is temporary at best.  Once the leaf is on top of the food the job is done, and it seems the food is undiscoverable except to them.
I have seen it is true what they say about Indian Myna’s.  They get about as a flock in the non-breeding times and pair up to breed in Summer.  One couple has decided an outdoor light of ours is a good place to breed.  It is so high we cannot get to them.  The only way we know they are there is the mess under their nest.
Their day is coming once we work out how to dissuade them.  In the meantime I must admit I do not like them but I do admire them.
