Immunity

Immunization seems to be a big issue at the moment.  There are people in both camps with strongly held views.  One of our best friends has a view that is diametrically opposed to that of Merril and I, but our friendship is not built on the acceptance of each other’s views.  We like that couple a lot.
Merril and I were holidaying in northern NSW one time and went to a market.  A mum had a really sick kid there.  We both though it would be better if so many people were not exposed to the sickness.  At work, none of us thanked someone for “soldiering on.”  Our thinking was always go away until you are not contagious.
I may be wrong and I will need someone to point it out to me, but my understanding of the immunisation against the flu is that people are infected with a tiny dose of the problem.  That way, the body learns to fight that problem because it has already been exposed to it.
What got me thinking about immunisation was less to do with the fighting off some physical malice but fighting some attitudes I may have that are not good for me.  My problem may be that I have built up an immunity to any other view.
I think the way they come up with many vaccines is to take a little bit of something to target a problem.  The whole thing may kill me, but a tiny dose can stand me in good stead.  It is one of the reasons why I am against the wholesale clearing of forests.  There may be a cure for cancer there that is lost forever to millions so a cow can graze.  I am not so sure it should never be done, but I do think it should never be done without checking first.
If that was my soap box moment I am down now.
I just do not want to be one who misses something because I had built up an immunity to it.  More than once I have had Merril point out a better way to me.  I had my ideas.  This was how I was going to go about it.  Then Merril suggests something I had never considered.  Yet when I do, I find it is the way to go.  If I had built up an immunity to her ideas, I would have missed out.  If it had been “my way or the highway,” I would have missed out.
I am thinking of those ladies that have rings around the neck, to make them look like they have been stretched.  That did not happen immediately.  The first rings are added before puberty.  The rest are added later.  They built an immunity.  Long ringed necks were seen as desirable, though their removal can cause death.
In the same way, if I am not careful, I can build up an immunity to what is really good for me.  It is not like it is an immediate thing, as I would see that coming.  It can be gradual.  Almost undetectable.  Before I know it, I am holding onto something that is really not in my best interests to hold on to.
To me, immunity is good, as long as I am not immune to something that is good for me.
