Imagine
There is an ad on tv for milo at the moment that shows kids daydreaming.  One has super strength, another jumps high over another to get the ball in the basketball hoop.  It ends with a kid daydreaming about his exploits and his mum saying something like “have you had your milo.”
It is beside the point, but I love that kid.  He is not stereo typical.  He wears thick glasses.  But imagination is not solely the domain of the super cool and good looking.  It is the domain of everyone.
Every day I use my imagination.  I need it.  I like to see what is possible and then go for it.  Of course, when I was a kid, I thought I was the centre of the universe.  Trouble was there were others that thought they were.  I cannot help it if they were wrong.
Growing up was a reality check.  But growing up did not spell the end of imagination.  It went through changes and there were more obstacles between me and my dream.  I needed to work harder.  And there was opposition.  It seems so much depends on how much I want what I am going for.  I can give up at the first sign of trouble, or I can see trouble as merely a hinderance rather than a reason to stop.
What matters to me is I fix my eyes on the goal.  There will inevitably be distractions.  Most are minor.  Some are major.  Some are life changing.  My stroke was life changing.  Maybe climbing Mt Everest should not be a goal anymore.  Just as well really it never was.  I find going up a slight incline challenge enough these days.
I know a lady who is ninety something.  Her eyesight is failing.  She used to do heaps of something in a day.  Now she does one.  She still has a goal, but it has been adjusted to take in the current circumstances.  I know it is my bent, but I find that really inspiring.  I sure hope that when I am ninety something my imagination will be fixed on what I can do and not what I can’t.
The thing for me is adjusting goals is not failure.  Not having a goal is.  My goal does not need to be world beating.  Years ago, I bought a record based solely on its title.  I had never heard it before.  It was called “Local Hero” (turns out it was a really good album).
I love that.  I love that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.  To me the aspiration matters less than the motivation.  On tv they have mentioned a couple of people that imagined things that many would find ho hum.  Like being a train driver, or driving a garbage truck.  To me what matters is being the best train driver or garbage collector possible.  Though why anyone would imagine being a dentist is beyond me.  All I can say is just as well they do cause occasionally I need a dentist.   Occasionally I need one in a hurry.
To me imagination has to do with fit.  It is like the human body.  We see the head but heaps of other parts make up a body.  Most of us are other parts and we need to be the best we can be.  For me to be that, starts in my imagination.
