I thought I made a mistake, but I was mistaken.

One thing I really enjoyed about where I worked was the freedom to make a mistake.  Just do not make the same one twice as Akio Morita said.  There was a real sense of the freedom to give it my best shot.  Mis       takes made were not the result of negligence but of lack of knowledge. Why it was important not to make the same one twice was that tends to be evidence of not having learned.
I am a great believer in “I can avoid many dire situations by learning from the mistakes of others.”  I do not believe for a moment I need to make them to learn.  Often learning is learning from others.  Successes and failures.
I must admit it is one of the reasons I am sus of algorithms.  Algorithms to me are the ideal but fail to take into account the human condition.  A mistake at a point in time is seen as a permanent feature that disqualifies. Yet a mistake is often a stepping stone to success.  Often those that have made mistakes are the best for a position as commonly they show a willingness to learn and adapt.
But it does seem in this day and age, there is a willingness to excuse my own mistakes, but to make an issue of the mistakes of others. All in an attempt to pull another down permanently to build myself up.
But there does seem to be a realization on the part of some that to err is human.  I have seen a real sympathy from some for others who admit to error.  No one is fond of someone who never admits to error and projects the image of invincibility.  In my mind they are definitely out there, and the outlook is an invitation to come a cropper.
I have been looking up proverbs from various countries about mistakes.  I am liking much of what I see. “A stumble may prevent a fall.” (English proverb). “Better to ask twice than to lose your way once.” (Danish proverb). “Justifying a fault doubles it.” (French proverb). “He is always right who suspects that he makes mistakes.” (Spanish proverb).
I like big time something Babe Ruth said. “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”  Giving it a go is what matters to me.    I agree with something I read from Persia, “there is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future.”  It is never too late to give it a go.  The biggest mistake to me is to not try in an attempt to avoid mistakes.
