I Think I Can

Think I Can
I am pretty pleased with some of the things I have managed to get done. I am discovering new limitations though. I really only find them by attempting and finding it really takes it out of me. I know some of it is just older age, and some of it is the consequences of tumour. Whatever the reason, my thinking is, while I can it will not stop me.
The best that sort of thing can do is make me aware of things I should not even attempt. For example, things involving heights I should not even attempt. It is the sort of thing I need to leave to another. I don’t necessarily like to need to do that, but I need to be realistic. My balance is not what it was.
That really came home to me when I was helping a person shift house. I was right into what needed to be done, but I needed to take a large item down some stairs. It made me really aware that all was not as it once was. I managed but it made me very aware of the way things were.
But I am very mindful that attitude rules rather than ability. It is important things are right, but they often take more than one go. I heard a guy say the other day he really does not mind an employee getting something wrong the first time when they go a place they have not been before. To the employer it is the fact they are giving it a go that counts.
It seems to me so easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize when others are out there, maybe failing, but giving it a go. Though it seems I live in a world of arm-chair experts. It happens a lot it seems in business. Many genuinely give it a go, yet others point out everything that is wrong. Some stuff can be taken on board and adjustments made, but heaps of it is just condemning someone who at least is giving something their best shot.
I may have been educated by the highest institution, had people of renowned tutoring me, grown up in the “right” family. It is so possible to have everything going for me but if my attitude is sus, it is of no value. Chances are, I will be overlooked when it comes to getting a job.
By the same token there are those that chip away at something. There is little natural ability. There has been nothing before to recommend them for this task. Yet their past record shows that whatever they were given to do they did it wholeheartedly, relished the sense of ownership, and worked at making something the best it could me.
That sort of attitude recommends someone to me, rather than a person having the qualifications being sort for the position. Too often I have seen someone doing something and known they were not the right one for the job. On paper they may have been, but in reality they were more a liability than an asset.
That is unfortunate. People can change but I want someone now. Limited ability but a fantastic attitude I can work with.
I know I am given a chance. So often what is in front of me is beyond me. But I’ll give it a go and ask for help. A setback is not the end. I will get it right. I’m in it, to win it.
