I Need You

I remember being enthralled by the 1960 movie the Time Machine.  It was remade in 2002.
What I remember distinctly is the beginning where the hero (George) travelled to way into the future and came across people called Eloi.  They lived on the surface of the earth and were food for people called Morlocks who lived below ground and only came out at night and fed on the Eloi.
What sticks in my mind was a scene where an Eloi was drowning and none of the other Eloi would lift a finger to help.  George rescues her.
That scene came to mind as I was thinking about how self-obsession causes me to ignore the needs of others.  Not a good look and something to be avoided where possible.
I remember when my mum passed away in the mid 90’s.  I was working and got time off to attend to matters.  All was done and I still had time off.  But I did not want to be alone at home so I went back to work early.  I needed people.  I needed to be absorbed in something other than what was legitimately absorbing me at the time.
There were twins born prematurely.  Girls.  They were placed in individual incubators in intensive care.  One did well and the other deteriorated big time.  The doctors had given up on her.  A nurse felt they should be put together in an incubator like they were in the womb.  That was not the policy of the hospital, and it took much persuasion for them to do it.
They did.  The healthy baby put her arm around the unhealthy one.  From then on, that baby started to improve.  Today both are happy healthy girls.  The story got attention from around the world and changed medicine.  It became known as the rescuing hug.
It seems to me often I can become self-obsessed and ignore those in need around me.  Yet I have found it is important to others I put others ahead of myself.  In those situations it is often that in helping to meet the needs of others my needs are met.  It is healthy and helpful.  Win win.
