I Don't Care

I was looking at quotes and came across some concerning apathy.  A number of them made sense to me.  One of the definitions I saw was “Apathy is defined as a state of not caring, characterized by a lack of interest or concern”
For me one of the things I find hard to hear is when another says “I don’t care.”  Sometimes that is just a learned response that says the matter being discussed is not one I give much thought to.
As far as I am concerned that is often ok.   It is when people say they do not care about say the poor, or those putting up with injustice, or those being falsely accused, that antennas go up in me.
I know that I would go mad trying to solve everyone’s problems or difficulties.  Sometimes the best I can do is endeavour to encourage or let a person know I am on their side and willing to help another help them.
At other times I am front and centre in the role of assisting.  Sometimes I am successful and sometimes not.  But if I feel to, I will give it a go.  There have been times I have been disappointed with out comes and thought hard about how things can be different.  At other times I have known success, and it is a great feeling for me to know I have made a difference for the better in someone’s life.
I know that helping out is generally a one on one affair and involves time and commitment.  My willingness or otherwise to be involved is something I must determine early.  For me there are few things worse than for me to say, “I will’ and later to say, “I won’t.”  Better the other way around and better yet saying “I will” or “I wont” and sticking with it.
Probably the last word should go to a quote I read by an Eric Hoffer. “it is a perplexing and unpleasant truth that when men have something worth fighting for, they do not feel like fighting.”
Some things are worth fighting for, even if I do not feel like it.
