Hyperliving
The other day I read a phrase by a futurist called David Zach.  He used the term “hyperliving  as in “skimming along the surface of life.”  Apparently, the term futurist in its current sense emerged in the 1940’s and looked at trends, possibilities, scenarios and emerging markets.  It was also used to identify risks.
I do like the term as I have felt life has become a rat race and people are on a tread mill going faster and faster but going nowhere of their choosing but of another’s.  It seems to me we have become a 24/7 society, and we operate best as 24/6 people.
I did find this when I was employed.  I thought nothing of continuing working on the weekends.  What I did find that when I worked both days of the weekend it ended up being the equivalent of two half days and I may as well have done it all one day and had the next day off.  Working 24/7 left me tired.
It is probably to often said that I need time to “smell the roses.”  In a sense I feel I know what that is about.  I operate best when I spend a day forgetting about the major task that occupies my mind, and doing something totally unrelated.
It is hard to explain but for me it works.  It is like trying to use my smart phone without putting it on the battery charger.  There is a limit to giving out.  The phone says 10% and before long refuses to work at all.  It needs to be recharged.  I need to be recharged.
In this society it seems this sort of thinking is not popular or encouraged.  It seems to me that too easily I could spend all my time working for “the man” only to be tossed aside when I am no longer useful to someone else’s purposes – someone I have blindly followed only to find I was duped from the start.
I do not mind following someone as I think that is the lot of us all.  It is the character of the someone I look at, and “is what they are asking of me best for both of us or just them?”
For me getting off the treadmill takes courage and a certain amount of trepidation.  There is a good chance I will still need to do what I do.   But doing it one way leads to burn out, while the other leads to burning with an ongoing and sustainable passion.  I pursue what is best for me.
