Huh?

The other day I read.: "The ability to observe without evaluating is the highest form of intelligence."  It was said in relation to something I have found to be true, though I do have trouble with the particular statement.
I do not know it is possible not to evaluate while listening.  I find though I can keep silent even if I do not agree with what is being stated.  Actually I think that is important.  As has been said we have two ears and one mouth, so we probably do well to spend twice as much time listening as we do speaking.
Some things for sure defy common sense and logic but in every case, it is important to me to hear someone before speaking.  Often the speaker has a weird concept but much else is to be conveyed that is worthwhile to me.
I feel I earn the right to speak by displaying a willingness to listen.    Often people are uninclined to open up when the feeling is it is a waste of time, and the hearer refers only to some preconceived idea.  Listening to speak rather than listening to hear.
The point was being made that often it is better to pause before speaking.  I have found that to be so true.  More than once, someone has declared something in the heat of the moment only to retract it when they have had a chance to cool down and think about it.  I have had to do the same.  I may be sincere, but it is possible to be sincerely wrong.
I know right and wrong are not a popular concept these days (apart from what is right or wrong for you.  It is a non transferrable concept).  Yet to me some things are obviously right and wrong and thinking otherwise requires all sorts of un-natural mental contortions.
I did look up the meaning of the word “evaluate.”  The Free Dictionary had this meaning, “To determine the importance, effectiveness, or worth of;” I do that while I listen.  I don’t know I can do otherwise.  I do however consider what is being said and while I may have other perhaps contrary views, I am open.  That for me is the only way to learn.
