Horror

There are some horrible stories being published right now. I have heard of people being tied up in a box and put in a river, and someone being tied up to a chair and left on the road.
I know it is not the case in all cases, but there seems to be a morbid fascination for such things. It is no wonder to me society in Roman times ended up with people being ripped apart by animals as entertainment. Seems to me I get used to something and some new worse form of horror is the only thing that satisfies. Briefly.
To me it is a case of reaping what we sow. There are all sorts of justifications offered, but I can’t help thinking the likes of video games are partly responsible. They are full of violence. Often it seems they are allowed just to keep the kids quiet.
It was incredibly briefly, but we had a game set up at work one time. It was linked across multiple computers. It was a war game and very tame compared to some I have seen. It was not long before I thought having a view of the world from the ground and looking nowhere in particular was a bit strange. It was then I realized I had been shot. I was dying. Then I was not a part of the game anymore.
The old saying is you are what you eat. I reckon that applies to what I feed my mind too. It is totally uncool, but Merril could verify it - I close my eyes when I know something gruesome is going to be shown on tv. I decided long ago that I can do without those images in my mind. It seems to me so often people’s fears are born of something seen. I know pctures come back into my mind at the most inopportune times.
I confess, I saw part of a horror movie once. It was at the drive in. It was not my decision, but we left really early and I was glad. As a kid I saw a ghost story and I can still picture the images about 50 years later. To not watch such things is my decision, and everyone makes their own. It seems some feed on scariness. The latest horror movie is a must see. Scariness is rated by some viewers.
I really am not surprised at what I am seeing. I reckon I am kidding myself if I think I can watch such things with impunity. A diet with too much sugar leads to unwanted consequences. So does a diet lacking protein. Why should I imagine that a diet of violence should be any different?
I would like it to be different, but thinking it is different does not make it different. Cause and effect seem to be everywhere. As our place is receiving so much rain at the moment, I think of the water that gathers at the top of the property. It heads to the bottom of the property. On the way it can erode and damage. I needed to make changes to stop it flooding next door. Cause and effect. Branches die on our tree. They fall off. Cause and effect. It is best I am not standing under the tree at the time.
I and others recoil at what is portrayed on the news. To me it is great I am one of many that are horrified at such things. I don’t know that I should be surprised there are horrible things happening though.
