Homesick

I guess I see it mostly in Rugby League, as I tend to follow that more closely than other sports.  People contracted to play but break their contract due to homesickness.  Sometimes the person is from England playing here and other times it is a player playing for a club that is not in their hometown.  Every chance a player gets they go home.  It really is where the heart is.
Not everyone though, (actually most don’t), succumb to homesickness.  I do not pretend to know the whole story every time and sometimes going home is justified.  It does often seem to me though, that giving in to home sickness is not justified.
When I moved to Brisbane I missed Townsville.  My family and friends.  I was very much on my own.  Yet I knew the time was right.  I loved Townsville and still do, but for me that was the past.  My future lay here.
Many yeas ago we had a couple visit us who had recently returned from holidaying in their homeland.  It was interesting to watch the guy.  He would pull out maps and talk nostalgically.  His words and behaviour very much suggested he was homesick for England to the point that that was his focus.
So often I talk to people, and they speak longingly of where they came from.  Many know they will go back.  Often they are here to gain the skills to help them back home.  I saw that a lot at uni.
Most deal with homesickness.  I do feel it is like many things.  There is unpleasant stuff that I endure but it always has an end.  Like a storm.  I do not find them pleasant, but every storm passes and blue-sky reigns again.
I do not know that everyone does not experience homesickness.  But not everyone yields to it.  It is a recognized phycological reaction.  Mercenaries experienced it.  People migrating experienced it.  Boarders experience it. Rugby League players experience it.  It is known that dealing with it and moving on is a positive experience.  Growth as a person happens.  Coping mechanisms kick in.
For most, but not all.  The depression and anxiety that are associated with being away from home lead to premature decisions.  There is a belief that a return to the past will make things like they were.  My experience is things are never the way they were.
In a sense to me weathering the storm is what it is about.  The road is not always smooth and comfortable but as long as I am heading in the right direction it always heads to home.  Sometimes I stop off at places I would rather not be at.  Yet I never stop needlessly.  It might just to be to refuel or get a bite to eat.  Whatever the reason I am always better off for it.
But there is nothing like getting home.  I love adventure, but I love familiar to.
