Home is where the heart is

There is a song that is my number 1 at the moment.  It is by a group call “The Afters” and it is called “What Home Feels Like.”  It is about heaven.
It has got me thinking about home.  I am incredible grateful for the place Merril and I are.  I do reckon it is house though, and we make it a home.  To my mind a home is more than a place to be, but it is what it is made to be.
Ok we reckon we have too much stuff and the older we get it seems the more we realize what we have kept for “one day” is never going to come.  So we have been unloading stuff, but still have heaps.
We still keep things that fill one of three criteria -  beautiful, useful or joyful, but I must admit there is still much here that is none of those.  I do feel it may be for someone, but not for us.  For us it is more like “burdensome.”
By the same token (and this is a personal thought) I feel often places are full of stuff that others need to deal with.   It is important to me to unload when I can, as I know the day will come when it is all too much.
Merril and I have what I think is a good way of dealing with things.  One of us go through stuff and decide what we would like to keep, and then the other goes through the stuff left and decide what they would like to keep.  Anything unwanted goes.  We generally sell it at a market for bargain prices.
It is amazing - we sold something recently that we did not want, and someone bought it because it meant they could sleep in a tent rather than their car.  I picked up something the other day that is incredibly useful to me, and they no longer required.
One of the big things I find is what I may find totally unuseful, is important to another.  I have learned not to despise what others find important.  Just because something does not matter to me, does not necessarily mean it does not matter.
It takes discernment and practice.  I have got it wrong, and disappointment is inevitable.  Why it takes discernment I reckon, is because sometimes another is just holding on because they won’t let go.  But I have found it is not for me to make the decision for another, but to let it go and let another make the decision for themselves.  That to me is win win.
One day I will say goodbye to everything.  Some things I need to say goodbye to earlier rather than later in making our house a home.
