Holiday Fishing

24/5/2019

As far as the holiday goes, so far so good.  We have managed to veg.
We have our fishing gear, but we don’t know if it will be used yet.  Yesterday I bought bait.  In the past I have caught a lot of fish.  I do not use the pawns from the bait shop.  I go to a major department chain and buy the uncooked huge prawns.  It is a little ritual of mine that when I have them home, I shell them and cut them up.  One thing I have discovered though, is that it is not a good idea to leave the rubbish in the car and forget about it.  The smell was there ages after the offending elements had been removed.
We would probably be more inclined to go fishing if when we looked from our balcony we actually saw people catching fish.  That is not to say people do not try.  There are a procession of people fishing.  I feel like going and telling them to do something else as they are wasting their time.  But fishing is more than catching fish.  Just as well.  It is a great environment to be in.  There are few things as relaxing as casting a line in and watching the world go by.  I reckon these people must be totally relaxed.
It is not like we do not see fish jumping.  We do.  My experience is I have never seen a fish jump for joy or with sheer exuberance.  Ok I have seen rays that leave the water and do summersaults and whales breaching and flying fish, but it is what they do.  It comes naturally.  Generally, when we see fish jump it means something is chasing them.  We surmise there must be something big out there.  Bigger than the jumping fish anyway.  When I see that, I home in on the spot and try to cast my line there.  All I can think is those jumping fish must be imagining things.
We brought our yabby pump this time.  We are unsure if it will be used, but it is there.  I am amazed there are any yabbies left.  Just about everyday we see folk yabbying.  Multiplied by the number of days people have been yabbying around here and I can only think that those yabbies left must have a lot of room.  I reckon yabby conversations must go “where’s Frank?”  “Dunno, he was here a moment ago.  As for Jenny, I haven’t seen her in ages.”
Still, fishing is a great “live in hope” thing.  Maybe today is my day.  Perhaps I will catch the unfortunate big one who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  I have caught a big one here before.  Ok it was a ray but I did not know that.  I suspected it though, when it just would not move.  Until then it was an epic battle.  Winner take all.  A fight to the death.  Well it was to me anyway.
So we have our bait.  We have our lines.  Will they be used?  Dunno.
