Hoarding Disorder

Interesting.  I briefly watched a show on tv about Hording.  There was stuff everywhere.  It is preferred these days it is called hording disorder rather than hording.
It piqued my interest and I looked up a few things about it.  Apparently between 2% and 4% of the population has hoarding disorder.  Which means it could be one in 25.
I did like one interview I read where they interviewed someone who has treated hundreds of cases.  What came across was how complex it is to deal with.  In a number of cases the person with the disorder thinks others have the problem and not them.  The show I saw on tv featured someone who was living in over-the-top things.  There was no room to move.  Yet they could not let go.  No matter what anyone suggested they were very much against it and said it could be sold.  That could have been done anytime but had not been.
Apparently, many with hoarding disorder find comfort in things.  Empty spaces are a problem.
One of the things I found interesting is most with hoarding disorder have a close relative with the same problem.  There is a genetic element.  Many who exhibit the disorder are not lazy but perfectionists.  They are reluctant to admit something may have been a mistake.  Many also have a problem with perception.  Avoiding waste is a desirable thing for all.  But it can be taken to the extreme in that nothing is disposed of because that is perceived to be wastage.
I was interested to know what the current treatments are.  Although there are cases listed in literature very little research has been done on it.  Different things work for different people.  There is no one size fits all solution.  A number were listed including Skills Training, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Support Groups and Medication.
The one that I was most interested in was called Motivational Interviewing (MI).  Apparently this one aims to increase motivation by helping individuals connect their values and goals with their behaviours.  While other methods may work and be appropriate, this resonated most with me as it is aligned with the way I see things.  I am big on replacement.
It is my belief that the only way to deal with something is to decide it needs to go for the sake of something else that I deem to be more important to me.  I call it replacement.  I will never deal with something if it is consistent with my current values and goals, but if I have a change of heart it may necessitate a change of behaviour.
That can be hard.  I may be kicking and screaming but if my motivation has changed it might be necessary.  I am not one for mandating a set of rules for myself.  I have found that some might be easy to comply with, while others I can find impossible.  I need help.
It is a disorder.  However I see it, love and compassion should be my motivation.  Perhaps I am the one with the problem to be dealt with right now.  My perspective can never be a “holier than thou” thing but always a “there but for the grace of God go I” thing.  I am the way I am.  Others are the way they are.  It is not up to me to change someone else.  Simply declaring what is right is not enough.  There are other ways.  “Love in action” works.
