Ho Hum

I am regularly trying to think of what I can come up with for writing.  The random dictionary finds are a good one for me and I find them challenging.  Other times I hit on an idea early and think I really want to explore that further.  I find writing about it focuses me.
Lately I have been thinking, “I will treat it like a diary.”  I would take what I consider has been the theme of the day and put pen to paper, or more correctly these days “fingers to keyboard.”
Today I have discovered a flaw in that idea.  The best way I can describe it is it is like those plaques a person can get “On this spot, in 1793, nothing happened.”  The flaw is “what if nothing happens?  What if there are no bolts out of the blue or light bulb moments?”
That has been today.  I have done things I am happy about.  Written emails and set up a private Facebook page.  Worked on a list I am working on.  Though about something I am sharing tomorrow.  Organized with my brother for Merril and I to have lunch at his place tomorrow.  Had lunch with Merril at the local shops.  Collected a ring for Merril’s birthday that was with the shop for size preparation.
All good things, but hardly what I could call life changing.  But something did occur to me just before that I consider worth considering.  Sometimes, nothing is a win.
Sometimes I think I need to be grateful for what did not happen.  For example, today I did not rob blind heaps of people.  That has got to be a good thing.  My name will not be in tomorrow’s paper for murdering people.  No one has reason to think they would be better off if I were not around.
All good things.  I prefer flashes of insight, and making something mine which changes my destiny, and that of others around me, for the better.  But today was just a “steady as she goes” day.
Reminds me of a story I read.  The example is from memory and may contain figures that are different, but the principle remains.  A guy wrote to his local paper saying he was never going to church again.  The reason he gave was that he had heard 350 sermons, and nothing stood out for him.  He questioned the value.  Debate raged in the letters to the editor but came to a screaming holt when someone wrote in with the following.  “I have been married 10 years.  In that time my wife has prepared 3,351 dinners for me.  Nothing has stood out.  But in the last 10 years I have been sustained.  I have had the strength I needed for the tasks I had.”
Why this has meant something to me is I feel sometimes what I do not do is the reward.  Days can be mundane and very ho-hum, but to me that is a win.  That has got to be better than being exciting for the wrong reasons.
