Helping Hand

I received a phone call.  I may be needed.  It was an unknown, but it was possible.  It was storming and many hands make light work.  Some things needed to come off a truck.  It was not like I was out and about and could not possibly make it.  I was home.  Less than five minutes away with no plans to be anywhere else.  I was willing and available.
I got myself ready just in case a phone call came.  I wanted to be able to go at a moments notice.  Sure enough the phone call came.  Spring into action time.  A quick getaway was called for.  Time to make tracks.
That was when it all went awry.  I grabbed my bag and headed for the locked front door with the aim of getting into my car and getting to where I was needed as soon as possible.  After opening the locked front door, I discovered the screen door was locked.  I needed the key to open it.  I found it and did that and locked the wooden door behind me.
It was then I discovered my car was not where I thought it was.  Where I expected to see it was bare.  Then I remembered it was now in the car port.  Going through the house to it was not a quick solution now as I had locked the door to the house behind me.
I had to think on my feet and it was just as well I was standing at the time.  I thought if I go through the side gate I can open the garage and get to my car.  I did that.
Unfortunately my car was hemmed in.  To use it I would need to move another car and access mine.  The key to that car was inside.  Fortunately, there was access to inside at the back.  I got the key and moved the car.
I could then access mine but I realized I had not moved the other car very far.  Getting out was going to require different movements.  I realized at this time that a quick get away was not going to happen.  Probably a slower get away than normal was closer to the mark.  Still, I was going to be there.
I got my car out and headed to the meeting point.  I obeyed all the appropriate speed limits and sometimes the speed limits can seem so slow.  Reminds me of the guy at work in his car who told me he was overtaken twice by a jogger in getting to work.  The traffic was bad.
Not to worry.  I pulled into the meeting point car park.  I needed to be careful though.  A truck was pulling out of the same car park.  It was the truck that had delivered the delivery.  At that point I wondered if it were all over and I had provided no assistance at all.
My thoughts were confirmed to be right as I entered the place where all was to be stored.  I met the person who had called me.  They told me it was done.
At least I knew I had been willing, but I definitely would have preferred to be a help.  But it was a conspiracy I tell ya.  Thwarted at every turn.  In my mind getting there had gone smoothly.  The reality was very different.
Anyway I knew the kettle had just boiled for the coffee I was going to have at home.
