Hangi
Had a hangi today.  I had to find out how to spell that.  It thought I was looking for hungry.  Well I was not after the hangi.
They are totally not over rated.  The food is cooked so nicely.  I don’t reckon we could do it regularly in our back yard though.  Unless we were happy to dig up the yard.  We are not, and besides it sounds too much like work to me.
Tell you what though it was worth it.  It really is a traditional Māori method of cooking food.  I thought it might be a south sea islander thing but it did originate with the Māori’s.  They were definitely onto a good thing.
I wanted salt on my meal so I went and got some.  Asking for it I was directed to two containers.  I thought one was pepper and one was salt.  So I put salt on and then used the other container to add pepper.  Except it was another container of salt.  People at other tables wanted salt to so I told them one was salt and the other pepper.   We were all blissfully unaware.
One lady though was suspicious.  She said, “looks like salt.” Ok it looked different but I had not checked.  She checked by putting some on the back of her hand and tasting it.  She declared it was salt.
From then on, I only offered one container.  Reminds me of a time mum thought she had put sugar in my tea.  Unbeknown to her it was salt.  She thought I was being very rude when she heard me from another room exclaim with some sound of disgust.  It was I guess the surprise that got me.
Like the time I gave my brother a cup of coffee.  He has almost a phobia about cleanliness.  A pretend fly was stuck on the bottom of the cup.  I have never seen a reaction like it.  He is very polite but when he got to the bottom and saw what was there he instinctively put the cup on the floor in the centre of the room.
Makes me think I will write at some time about the things I got up to.  I will never forget renting a place with a couple of guys and putting spanners and the like in one guy’s pillow case.  I listened out when he went to bed.  I was not disappointed.  He got me back though.  Unknown to me he unscrewed one of the legs of my bed and built it up with empty match boxes.  In the night I must have rolled over and the bed ended up at a very odd angle.
I did not mean for the salt thing to happen but it did and I corrected it as soon as I knew.  Fortunately it did not spoil the meal for anyone.  I did not want it to because I find hangi’s a good thing.
