Greed

20/3/2020

Everything seems to be turned on its head.  For ages I resisted putting up Corona virus cartoons.  When I say ages that is in Corona virus time.  About a week which is like years.  I did the same with McDonalds.  For ages I resisted, but my conclusion is the one I have reached now.  Why bother.
An age-old question was asked on the 7.30 Report tonight.  The question was “how can we trust the government?”  The question was asked in relation to the response to what is going on.  Seems to me sometimes I can trust them, and sometimes I can’t.
Why that got me thinking is I believe the major problem we are seeing is a greed problem.  No doubt there are lots of other problems, but I have seen greed show itself in this crisis.
To me, toilet paper hoarding is a greed thing.  It is making sure of number one and makes a number two for others more difficult.  I cannot help but feel that when we are told “don’t hoard” by the government, the ones who won’t hoard are the ones who won’t hoard.  Many of those that will hoard will go on hoarding no matter what is said.
Another example I saw of the greed issue, was when I was traveling about in the car the other day.  One place had petrol at $1.17.  Up the road petrol was $1.57.  The way petrol prices fluctuate I thought maybe the price had changed in the time it took to get to that petrol station.  Apparently not.  On tv last night they were talking about how some were price gouging.  The price should have been way lower, but they were maximizing their profits.
Greed for money is an age-old problem.  It is not to negate a genuine problem and the necessity to feed myself and family.  It is hoarding money I see as a problem.  Accumulating more than is needed, to the point of hoarding more than will ever be needed.  I have seen stories of people who have died alone and unloved.  They were rich in money but not rich in love.
For some it seems greed is an action that causes pangs of regret.  Others give themselves over to greed.  I reckon they are the ones who will not respond to reasonableness.  Many are exhibiting the acts of kindness we hear about at the toilet paper rack.  Others see that their actions hurt, and their better nature prevails.  For others it is every man for themselves and blow you Jack.
What sort of person I am is determined more by my actions and then by my words.  If it is good, I cannot take credit for it.  To me that is like one of the millions of pieces of Lego taking credit for being that piece of Lego.  Really, they had no control over it.  I can build on the good, but I cannot take credit for the good that was there in the first place.
If the stroke taught me anything it is how quickly things can change.  I went in one way and came out another.  I am glad they did what they did though.  I was going to die of the tumour not with the tumour.  The point for me is, any good in me is a gift that can be gone in an instant.
I will always be thankful I am what I am.  Greed manifests itself in me, but when push comes to shove, I would rather a lot have what they need, rather than just me.
