Golf

I haven’t played in ages, but I was thinking this morning about my illustrious golfing career.  Well illustrious might be too much.  Probably better just to say golfing career.
It was really only natural that golf be a game we played.  My dad was a very good and keen golfer.  He was off a handicap of two at one stage and captain of the Townsville golf club.  He was also President and a life member of the North Queensland Golfing Association and secretary of the Townsville, Rowes Bay and Mackay clubs.
We three brothers all played ,golf.  The other two were probably better than me but only one joined clubs and played regularly.  Still does.
Some of my best memories were of having dad live with me and me finishing work at 4pm and us having time to play 9 holes at Carindale.  At other times we would play Wynnum.  When I moved up here we would play Bribie Island when we could.  We loved that course.  We also played Caboolture.  That has some real pretty holes.
I was amazed to learn that when I was looking at moving up this way, Stuart and Dad played Dakabin when they were checking out the area.  Dakabin has no doubt improved but I found it so rocky when I played it.
Basically often I did not know what I would be faced with on the golf course.  One time Townsville golf course flooded and we caught really good fish with our hands.  But they tasted so muddy none of us wanted to eat them.
My favourite golfing memory was a golfing holiday a mate and I took from Townsville.  We went north at played Ingham, El Erish, Cairns, the Atherton Table Lands and Daintree.  Daintree we played on Christmas day and no one else was on the course.  Paying was via an honour system.  We enjoyed ourselves but it was real muggy.   Ingham was the only course I have ever hit out of a horses hoof impression.  The course was next to the race track.
I have never been a world beater, but I have had my moments.  Moments of the miraculous that probably only live on only in my memory.  And like for any sport I have played there are times I think “stupid game.”  But then something outstanding happens on the course and I can’t wait to get back into it again.
