Getting There

This something I read by a painter called Chuck Close.
"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to do an awful lot of work.
All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you're sitting around trying to dream up a great idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that's almost never the case."
I have said for a long time something not original but something I have found to be true.  “Life is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.”
I reckon it is needful to be inspired about something in the first instance.  It is what gets me going.  It is a goal I am endeavouring to reach.  It is the spark that ignites.
Yet for all that I find it necessary, I find it is the hard work that makes something happen.  It is the doing something when I do not necessarily feel like it.  It is the looking beyond my feelings to what I believe.
I find it so necessary to be doing something and get renewed inspiration along the way.  So often for me it is in the ordinary and mundane I get the further inspiration I need.  For me a journey is not just about getting there, but about the process of getting there.

Often it seems if I knew what was involved on the journey, chances are I would stay home.  Yet it is the goal that inspires.  Getting there is mostly perspiration, but totally worth it.
