Four Days

31/3/2024

This public holiday thing does not make sense.  Here I am retired, and every day I can choose to do what I want to, yet public holidays are looked forward to as a break from routine.
Certainly they can be a bit disruptive in that shops may not be open.  Merril was surprised how busy the shops were last Thursday.  Then we figured it was a holiday next day and the shops were not open, so people were out in droves getting stuff.
It always surprises me how one day without the shops seems to bring everyone out to be “prepared.”  I hope that if the worst came to the worst, I could forage in the fridge to find enough to last me the day of dearth.  Worst case scenario is that I go without for a day.  That should not be a problem, as we have water on tap here.
For me though, more than at any other time I want food when I know I cannot have it.  Still one day is ok.  Even though I am skinny going more than one day is not easy for me.  One time I had no access to food, so toothpaste substituted.  Ok not the same but boy did it taste good.  I never forgot someone saying their car broke down and it was so long (long being a relative term) before help arrived, they ate the lino of the car seat.
Anyway the shops were closed for one day.  But we had what we needed.  It was a perfect opportunity to do things.  For a retired person four days off is like it provides focus.  Merril has gotten into stuff and worked to a time limit.  It is weird for me.  I know I am not supposed to lift any weights beyond like 2kgs I think.  The first week after the op was terrible in that I reckon I had a temperature two days and was in pain.  Ok maybe not childbirth pain but sore.
That is not so much the go now, but I know I should not lift and am sticking to it.  It can be hard for sure and Merril is wanting to keep me away from many normal locations as I am likely to see a need and fulfil it as per usual, and now is not usual.
Still, some things can be done, and I am really enjoying having a break.  I am actually really enjoying not doing some of the usual stuff as it has meant others have needed to do stuff.  It has enabled me to explore a plan b as it were, and consider scenario’s I had not considered but should.
But the Easter holiday is coming to an end.  Beyond it I reckon things will be different but the same but different.
