Fighting for You

I subscribe to an email from Switchfoot (which are Merril and my favourite band).  I have seen them live once (booked to see them twice).  Rain was a feature of both times.  The time I actually saw them they were performing indoors and we waited to go in in the rain.  The second time was at an outdoor venue and the rain was torrential.  The concert needed to be abandoned.  So near and yet so far really.  They were an act to follow the one we were watching but it rained unbelievably.  The main tent which was huge was in danger of collapsing.
Occasionally an email contains a sample of some new music that has been put on YouTube.  I was listening to one and the lyrics really stood out when Jon Forman sang, “I’m fighting for us, but most of all for you.”
My mind turned to my relationships.  I have friends and acquaintances, but wherever I stand it is unequivocally true that I want the best for those I have contact with.  It may sound Pollyanna like, but it stands.  I may have been hurt.  I may have wondered why.  I may have been used.  But the fact remains that I am just as capable of inflicting harm as are all I come in contact with.  Thankfully it is the exception rather than the rule.
Like everyone, I never had a say in who I was born as.  Definitely, I have a choice in what I do with who I am, and I will always aim to be better.  But there are definitely times I need a service and tune.  The thing for me though is, while I will always be careful, I have enough on my plate dealing with me let alone anyone else.  The way others are, is theirs to deal with.
Having said that though, I am fighting for us, but mostly for you.  I have blind spots (if I could see it, it would not be a blind spot) and I hope someone is fighting for me.
To be fighting for someone else can only come from a place of security.  If I have the same need as another, I can get along side them but I cannot help them.  There is a beer ad for “Great Northern” that shows people giving a hand to others and they are rewarded with a bottle of beer or a carton (there are other intoxicating drinks I like the taste of, but I have never taken to beer.  Many would not relate to that.)
The thing for me is, fighting for someone means giving a hand when it is needed.  It may only be a little thing, or it could be costly.  Whatever the case, the only reward it is being done for, is the sense that it is what I am to do.  I know I like it done for me when needed.
It is not brain surgery (though it may be when addressing a brain surgeon).  It is just the way things are.  It may only be a behind the scenes thing, but always I’m fighting for us, but mostly for you.
