Fall-Back

It seems much of what I write about has to do with war.  It is not like I have been on the battlefield with guns and tanks.  But I do know I have been on the battlefield of the mind.  Holding to something that is not as it is, but I imagine it to be, takes effort to see it come to pass.  It is sometimes not easy.  It means war!  I find that often the bigger the dream, the harder it is to attain.
But they say anything worth attaining is worth fighting for. 
So I was considering something before.  Fall back positions.  It seems in any major war there are setbacks.  Skirmishes that are lost.  Battles that do not go according to plan.
Yet an army does not base win or loss of a war based on one skirmish or battle.  Losses are setbacks, for sure but they are not the final story unless I choose them to be.
It can for me be almost like, two steps forward and one step back.  I can be like, cruising.  Things seem easy peasy.  I wonder what all the fuss is about.  Then I have a battle with something that I have battled before.  Little did I know it was just taking a breather.  Gathering the troops for another assault.
Yet even good can come from that.  Naturally a win is always preferable but how often do I hear coaches say, “we learnt from that loss.”  I want to win of course but above all I want to learn to win.  I am convinced that easy wins are appreciated less than hard fought wins.  I know I cherish more something costly than something cheap.  A costly item I guard and protect.  A cheap item is like easy come easy go.
Sometimes I go out to win and return with my tail between my legs.  It is at that point I think I need a reliable fall-back position.  Just because my current methodology was wrong does not mean everything I have stood for has been wrong.  They say the definition of insanity is to do something the same way and expect different results.
There are times when reassessing and remembering is the best thing I can do.  I have what it takes to win.  I just need to learn to win.  Temporary losses hurt.  But a loss is just one more way not to do it.  The next time I sally forth may be to victory.  Maybe two wrongs do not make a right but two rights are like, totally right!
