Fair

Goodness knows when it came about but being fair means a lot to me.  I like to examine the rules of a game and make sure it is fair to both sides and an even contest is possible.   It is understandable if it seems like I am whinging, but the Broncos seemed to be treated unfairly by the umpire when they recently lost.  I felt Canberra were treated unfairly when they lost the grand final in 2019.
What makes unfairness even harder to take, is when I am powerless to stop it.  Sometimes, a trial for example, is a set up.  It is not about fairness, but about getting someone’s way no matter what.  It is rigged.   Some circumstances spring to mind immediately.
It seems to me unfairness is one of the major downers people are trying to rectify.  This seems to be truer in our day and age than it has ever been.  I am totally for that.  I am not for rectifying perceived unfairness that is a current trend - even though it may be a view that is held to by a majority.  I am against unfairness that produces inequality unjustly among people.
And I am also not for trying to rectify unfairness by shouting the loudest or getting my way by fair means or foul.  I see some things that happen and think, that is behaviour just the same as that being condemned.  I know that should they get their way, and even though their cause may be just, I cannot help but feel we will confront the same problem with a different name.  There are many causes I am sympathetic with, but I will not embrace some methods used to achieve fairness.
It really depends on what the fairness is built on.  A common child’s cry is “it’s not fair!”  Yet adults know it is.  There are things where I might cry “it’s not fair!” yet it is.  I may not be privy to the whole story.
It seems to me unfairness is one of the major problems faced as a race.  Often it seems those in power use people as pawns, rather than seeing them as human beings.  What is worse is when a people group is hated without just cause, and the case against them is built on lies.
I am pleased though that justice always prevails.  Sometimes I do not get to see it.  Sometimes a lot of suffering occurs.  In one sense it does not matter to me when a power spreads its wings and attempts (sometimes successfully) to impose their will on others.
I will always be sorry that needless suffering has occurred, but as we are seeing, justice will be done – it may take decades, or a lifetime, or more than a lifetime (it is why to me some ideologies are such a threat.  They think in life cycles while we think in election cycles.).
It amazes me how the desire for fairness is universal, while unfairness is the despised domain of a few.  It appears to be the case though, what goes around comes around.  Those who hold power and exercise injustice live a precarious life.  They can expect to have someone do to them what they willingly do to others.  Often, they feel they need to clear the decks but still spend their lives looking over their shoulder.
Perhaps I am a dreamer.  I still prefer my dream to seeing unfairness prevail.
(Prov 2:9)
