Extinct
Animals are going extinct big time.  Not just animals but insects.  We have noticed it in the time we have been here.  There are now less birds.  Less butterflies.  Though I do think Merril’s insect house was never going to be occupied.  The vacant sign was like a permanent sign.
We may be the alfa species, but we can care.  There is room for us both, but it does take adjusting the way we do things.
I am not in favour of my world shrinking to make their world larger.  We had a possum that had decided the garage door was a good place to live.  Wasn’t good for us though.  Every time we would open the door we would listen for screams.  (it was not being hurt, but had suffered a rude awakening)
I have put covers over where he used to get in.  Merril has now made a possum home so he can live there if he chooses to.  Our world had shrunk.  I will take that when I need to, but otherwise I will look for a compromise.  I am happy with the one we have reached.  He is still about.  I hear him in the garden.  At night I hear footsteps.  That would be really spooky if I did not know what it was.
Though there is much I cannot control, there are things I can.  It seems a lot of things have disappeared because I make my environment so pristine by poisoning everything.  When I think of the poison available in my house to annihilate all bugs that might attack our lawn or trees, I would not want to live here either if they were used willy nilly.
We have a creek near our place.  They have cemented it and it makes it look nice but where do the animals go?  There are now no pools for fish and water is unavailable when it is dry.  Frogs have lost habitat.  When I consider those things, it is no wonder those that feed on such things have disappeared to.
I know I can’t do much, but I can do something.  The thing is, the more and more households that do it, the better it gets.  There are effective remedies to problems other than deadly chemicals.  Maybe if I use them less around the yard things will want to live here.
We love that birds like to wander our yard and that native bees are secure.  And the worms have a home.  And we try to put as much natural product back into our environment as we can.
We are amazed and pleasantly surprised how what we consider waste product is what some things feed on.  It takes time, but it is like win win.
For sure we are not perfect, but we are giving it a go.
