Expectation

There is a word that has been intriguing me of late.  It is the word “expectation.”
I do like to think about positive words. I am flabbergasted by how dark many of the ads on tv are right now.  The feature of many shows seems to be deceit and despair.  To me there is enough of that around without me including more in my diet.
What has intrigued me is the difference between hope and expectation.  Their definitions are incredibly similar.  To establish the difference, I have been thinking (of all things) of our bird feeding.
I am sitting writing this in the dark.  When light comes, I know something else will come with it.  A crow we feed.  To me it has more than a hope.  It has an expectation that has been built on experience.  In the past when it comes, I have seen it and responded.  In fact, it is now getting closer to me than ever.  Even while I am still putting the food out it comes down and hops around nearby until I have finished.  Then it is into it.  Its expectation proved to be right.  It had a well-founded hope that has led to a reasonable expectation.
If on the other hand a new bird comes alone, it has a hope only.  It does not know me.  Its hope can prove to be futile (and rightly so really as we do not encourage a plethora of crows but only the family that comes).  Good chance I will chase them away (nicely or not, whatever it takes really).
So to me while reliable hope is always a good thing, expectation is a different thing.  Expectation can be built not just on hope but on fear.  When I have not done something I should have, I have an expectation of being reprimanded.
So in relation to hope and expectation, I feel hope is a building block and expectation is a consequence.    If my hope is based on something solid and trustworthy (like the crows getting some food) then my expectation is reasonable.
I reckon I can actually take expectation further.  If my hope has proved to be reliable in the past, then based on the reliability of my source. I have no reason to doubt that my future expectations will be met.
Makes sense to me anyway.  What does it all mean?  I’m working on it.
