Equality

I must admit I have never understood why women who do the same work do not get the same pay.  But there are many things I do not understand.  I have never thought the caste system in India was fair.  I may be born into something, so my lot in life is less than another.  Not because I was lazy, not because I was not as good, but because of my birth.  When it comes to equal pay for equal work being determined by gender only, it does not seem right to me.  It seems to me there is no justification.
There are some things written that I and the human race neglect at our peril.  Not providing equal pay for equal work is not one of them.  When something is wrong I will war against it.  I will use legitimate means.  However using legitimate means does not mean I agree with it.  It just means if possible, I will not set myself up for a fall if I can help it.
I guess what has got me thinking about this now is a speech I am reading by Martin Luther King Jr.  In another speech he recalls how he was knifed by a demented black woman.  The blade came so close to his aorta that the papers wrote “if he had of sneezed, he would have died.”  A ninth-grade white girl wrote to him in hospital “Dr King, I’m glad you didn’t sneeze.”
The African Americans had to really fight for something that was blatantly obviously right.  Race is not a sign of superiority.  To me there is good and bad in all of us, no matter what race we are born into.  What they were asking for was not out of left field.  The founding fathers had written “all men are created equal.”  Did that mean all men, or just the white fella?
They say “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.”  Mostly I would agree with that.  It does not mean however that everything the Romans do is right.  A lady at work said something I have never forgotten.  She said , it is right for all, or it is not right at all.
It has to be something more than me not just thinking that something is not right.  In many cases what I think is built on prejudice, upbringing and discrimination.  Just because something is not right to me, does not mean it is not right.
I see a bit of that happening right now.  Someone does me in based purely on what they perceive is right.  Again I think, that does not make them right.  I like to look at the outcome of an action.  Will the world be a better place based on my action?  If not, I need to pack my bat and ball and go home.
This is a flaw of democracy I feel.  To me a majority provides legitimacy, but it does not mean a majority is always right.  A majority may deem indiscriminate murder right.  Would that make it right?
In our society where there are no absolutes then if the majority think it is right then it is right.  However, to believe that is like a fish believing a bait is just a meal without a hook in it.
