Eat the Worms

I like to say “eat the worms and spit out the germs.”  There seems to me to be a lot of good stuff out there and a lot of rubbish too.  There was a show on tv I was watching.  I enjoyed it for a while.  Trouble was, there seemed to be so much rubbish between the gems.  I don’t watch it anymore.  It just was not worth it.   When I have a shower water makes me clean.  Muck does not.
There is heaps I am against.  People say and do things that I want nothing to do with.  I do not presume that is a forever thing, but it is a now thing.  Yesterday a guy was telling me about a school reunion he went to.  The people attending he had not seen since school.  One fella at school had been so uppity.  He had been so standoffish that no one wanted anything to do with him and consequently he was pretty well friendless.  Yet at the reunion it was obvious he had changed.  He was the most friendly, welcoming person in the room.  He was genuinely interested in everyone.
He had changed.  I can change.  I heard about a group of people that were not happy with the direction the group had gone in.  They left.  Others stayed behind. Leaving  was not a “I am not getting my way thing, so I’m leaving.”  It was sort of like me choosing not to watch the program anymore.
I guess it is a choice.  It seems I have heaps of things I can take on board.  But I will always acknowledge that who I am now is not necessarily what I will be in 10 years.  Things chance.  What I think is true turns out to be otherwise.  It is so embarrassing, but I thought my heart was in the middle of my chest but it really is to the side.  Someone I know changed their position based on what I said, and I do not think that now.
I honestly would not like someone to base who I am on something I may have said 10 years ago.  Even something I said yesterday.  I base what I hold to on what I think is right, but it is best for everyone to prove something for themselves.  Being well meaning does not guarantee being right.
I found that out big time when I was in charge of an organization.  Nothing untoward happened, but I knew the ground I stood on needed to be more than he or she said.  What mattered most was what the relevant source said.
There is so much good stuff around.  There is no doubt an increase in bad stuff as the tv news shows.  But at the moment it seems there is more good stuff than bad.  If I am presented with two glasses and one contains water and the other muck I will go for the water.   If it is just one glass and it contains both, I feel it is a matter of replacement.  I can replace the muck with water.  My choice.
I choose to fix my mind on the good, while not ignoring the bad and doing something about it where I can.  I know I am capable of bad but that does not define me.  There are lifestyles I would not embrace but there are good things that are said and done.
What I do I think is called “cherry pick.”  Or it could be called eating the worms and spitting out the germs.
