Early Action

19/7/2024

As per usual there is a lot to think about in the James Clear email this week.  I tend to gravitate to things that seem applicable at the time.
This week there are a number of things I am thinking about right now, but I have gravitated to what I am writing about, as it is front and centre right now.  “Some projects benefit from early action. If you're writing a book, it's easy to spend a lot of time brainstorming titles and dreaming up an outline, but it's better to simply write. The book discovers itself as you go. Yes, you'll need to go back and organize things, but this is easier to do once you have material. The key is to act first and then organize your thinking.
Other projects benefit from early planning. The best way to build a skyscraper is to plan carefully. If you start placing steel beams on day one, you're guaranteed to run into problems. It is harder to make changes once you've begun. You'll need to tear it down and start over again. The key is to organize your thinking and then act.
Do you need early action or early planning?"
This makes sense to me and may seem obvious in the saying, but it is really obvious to me in the doing.
Right now I have been working on a project I felt needed early action.  I felt I could plan forever, and no one would be the better for it.  Or I could act, perhaps in some ways inadequately, but what is needed would be available.  I could correct as I went.
That is not to say no planning went into what I had to do.  It was necessary, but I feel better having something out there that can be made better as I go.
As he says some projects benefit big time from early planning while others benefit as I go along.  The important thing to me is just to get it out there.
