Don't Try So Hard

This is totally weird, and I reckon can so easily be misinterpreted.  I have Spotify on random songs right now.  So I do not know what is coming up next.  A song by Amy Grant came up called “Don’t try so hard.”
I feel I can understand where that song comes from.  She was a superstar at a very young age.  Then things went awry.  I do not know the whole story, but she was misunderstood by some.  She was dropped like a hot potato.  What I empathize with is she went through battles.  Very public.  It is so easy to throw stones.
Naturally, it is disappointing when any icon comes crashing, but it seems to me the only difference between us is her super star status.  Struggle is not just the domain of the rich and famous.  It is the domain of every human being on the planet.  Perhaps I need to be more ready to help and less ready to judge.
I came a cropper one time and was told that so and so knew that was going to happen.  I did have a problem appreciating that.  I felt at the time and still feel, why did they not spend more time trying to ensure it did not happen?
Anyway the song was called “Don’t try so hard.”  I am totally for giving something my best and trying through the pain.  Not giving up just because something gets hard.  It seems that just about anything worth pursuing gets hard.  But the end prize is worth it.
There are other things though that I just need to let go.  I need to ask myself is it hard because it is not for me?  If the answer is yes, then to me I need to not try so hard.  I need to let it go.
Maybe others will not understand.  They will see me as a quitter.  But what matters to me is I will know.  I can’t help think of the kid that struggles to be a lawyer because that is what dad wants.  It has been the family tradition.  But the kids’ heart is in being a musician.  There may not be as much money in it, but happiness matters more to the kid than money.
Every situation is different, and it is not a one size fits all thing, but the point for me is no matter the situation there must be a letting go.
I remember saying something I thought was important and a couple of kids were laughing.  They said what I had said reminded them of an episode of the Simpsons.  Homer had his hand stuck in a vending machine.  Nothing could release him.  Finally, people came and took the machine apart.  His hand was stuck alright – because it was wrapped around a can and he would not let go.  Let go and release would have been immediate.  But because he held on, he was stuck.
I have forgotten what I said but I never forgot that.  To me it is not about the approval of others or doing something just to save face.  It is about doing what is right for me to do.  Like most I go up dead end streets, or streets where I need to make a U-turn.  I may need to eat humble pie, and others may not understand, but inside I know I have done what is right for me to do.  If there is a cost, so be it.  Personally, I would rather that then accolades with disquiet.
