I was going to say I sound like a broken record, but record is perhaps something which is not related to much these days.  Fortunately, there is a niche market for records.  Really there is a niche market for much that I took for granted growing up.
Once there were video stores everywhere.  Now there are hardly any.  It is all vending machine.  I feel printing is going the same way in that there will be many less players.  Photography is the same.  Mostly digital now.  There is a niche market for film still.
So what is the equivalent of a broken record?  Something that jumps but gets stuck until it is nudged on.
The reason I was going to say that, is it occurred to me just a moment ago that it matters less how something is done, as long as it is done.  Often it is not done the way I would do it, but it is the result that matters most.
Even when a task is delegated the doer has a sense of ownership.  It becomes theirs to solve.    Micromanaging can interfere.  Watching, but allowing someone to find their own path, is best for everyone.
At times I find there is a better way of doing something, but I will never know if I do not ask.  For me, what I learn is often one of those things that I store up for a rainy day.
I was at a group meeting the other day and one of the things I particularly liked was there was very little talking over each other.  So often it seems to me that the loudest voice wins.  I do not have the loudest voice and do not want one, so although my thoughts may be legitimate, they are not considered as I was not heard.  One place I was in was like that, and I felt I was wasting my time being there.
The reason the meeting comes to mind is something was said that I feel is so right.  They said, “we shouldn’t re-invent the wheel.”  I cannot believe the number of times I see it done.  Everything is there.  Everything is available.  But it is not used.  Hours are spent making something that has been made.  I am sure I have done it before, but I’m learning (better late than never).
Being lazy helps.  Although I do not believe lazy is the right word.  I do have trouble with doing something the hard way when it can be done the easy way.  Merril and I saw an English chap comment that we Australians often say, “too easy”.  His thought was, “Ok I’ll make it harder then”
There needs to be a willingness to share stuff.  Some keep information close to their chest.  It is like “if I share this, I will not be indispensable.”  As someone said though “Too many companies are reluctant to share technical information about threats with each other, and most open platforms and tools don't see widespread adoption. As a result, lots of us are reinventing the wheel and solving the same problems without realizing that our neighbours have already built great solutions.
Sometimes things just need to be done.  Thankfully not everyone is a silo, and often my problem has already been solved.
